Hat Trick for Amberley Labels:
FINAT Award, WLLA Nomination

By Ratanaporn B. Jakobsen

HP Indigo WS6000 Digital Press installed at Amberley Labels

HP announced that Amberley Labels, of Blandford, Dorset, has achieved three important milestones in its development as a leading digital label converter: winning a FINAT Award, the nomination for entry in the World Label Awards Association and the installation of an HP Indigo WS6000 Digital Press.

Amberley won the 'Marketing and End-use applications' category in the 2009 FINAT Awards, for a 'no label look' label produced for luxury brand Fortnum & Mason Still Blenheim Palace Natural Mineral Water. The award was presented at a ceremony in Brussels during Labelexpo Europe. The label was produced using Amberley's HP Indigo press ws4050. Following this success the label has also been selected for entry in the World Label Awards Association (WLAA).

"This label was very complex to produce as it involved printing identical images, back-to-back on a clear film substrate," Graham Backhouse, sales and marketing director, Amberley Labels. We had to use our digital technology to its full capabilities, printing the first image, followed by a white backing layer, then the second image in very tight register, so that images lined up perfectly. We were absolutely delighted with the quality of the final result achieved. The HP Indigo press was able to reproduce all the fine details and accurately replicate the colours required to create a highly attractive label with a striking shelf presence - exactly what Fortnum & Mason required," said Backhouse.

Adding capacity
Amberley's new HP Indigo WS6000 Digital Press can run at speeds up to 30m/min and print up to 300,000 linear metres per month. Amberley plans to use the increased capabilities of its new press to encourage more customers with medium-run jobs to consider migrating work from conventional print processes to digital production.

"At Amberley we pride ourselves on offering not only the highest possible quality labels, but also devising new ways to support our customers and to help them achieve their goals - it was vital that we invested in technology that could help us do this," continued Backhouse. "Purchasing our WS6000 Digital Press and our new Digicon finishing equipment has doubled our digital capacity, ensuring that we can respond faster to our customers' requests, with maximum flexibility."

Founded in 1979, Amberley has established a reputation as one of the UK's premier self-adhesive labels producers. Its customers include many well-known blue-chip companies from the cosmetics, toiletries, healthcare and specialist food markets. In 2003, Amberley began producing digitally printed labels using HP Indigo technology. Since 2005, the company has operated an HP Indigo press ws4050 and an HP Indigo press ws4000, which was uptraded for the new HP Indigo WS6000 Digital Press.
